August 25, 2012  Sandborn Indiana     Black Creek Festival

We had a real great time performing at the BCF and had a chance to visit with folks I had not seen in years.
Sandborn is where I grew up and attended school until the consolidation of the schools in Knox County Indiana, first as Vigo then, as North Knox Scchools.
Back in the 50's and 60's Sandborn was a great place to be, but, as is so often the case with small towns we watched the decline in businesses and economic developement.
I remember when there where two food stores, both well stocked and thriving, a butcher and locker house,
a hardware store that sold everything from dynamite to fishing gear and nails and paint. I used to go in there just to smell the place, the oiled wooden floor that creaked as you walked across it, the high ceilings and giant fans that turned slowly and the ceiling high shelves filled with every thing you could think of. A canon in the middle of town commemorating the Veterans and the old school yards with the merry-go-round, slides and swings.
There was a restaurant/garage/truck stop out on hwy 67 and across the road a filling station/garage with another restaurant beside it. There was another gas station down town beside the Post Office, another garage down the street, a feed store, a fertilizer plant, a library, a bank, a pool room, a furniture store, a laundrymat, a drugstore, a grain elevator, rail station, hotel and a funeral home. I am sure I have overlooked something, but you get the picture. There was quite a bit going on.
Now there is a quick mart on hwy 67. The canon is still in the middle of town but almost everything else has went away, the plight of small town USA.

Besides me, there were some very talented musicians at the festival, Jeff Gentry, Bill Bowersock, Kyle Ellis, Brett Stremming, a christian band, and several others that I saddly cannot remember the names of.
I enjoyed doing my set and also joining in with the other fine musicians.
It was nice to have some of the older citizens come to me and tell me they remembered me and was happy to see me again. Thanks to all the wonderfull people and fans that made the effort to come aout and see us, and support the festival. Maybe I'll see you there next year!
